Biggest Loser Finale Winner: Reactions About The Show

Michael Ventrella, of Chicago, Ill, surprised himself by winning season 9 of NBC’s The Biggest Loser Tuesday night. After starting the weight loss challenge as the heaviest contestant in the history of the show, he ended up losing a total of 264 pounds by the end of the finale.

As I watched The Biggest Loser finale live, I joined the discussion on Twitter.

Facebook Vs. Twitter: Blackberry Applications

Facebook and Twitter applications will make texting obsolete sooner rather than later. At least that is how I see it. Why text when you can tweet?

Mobile communication is growing and if you are not connected, then you may be left behind.

Practically everyone is walking around with a smart phone these days. It is a constant sight to see people glued to their Blackberry, iPhone or other mobile device.I recently downloaded the new “trial” Twitter for Blackberry application.

Not too long after that, I was no longer able to access the Twitter for Blackberry application. As of today, each time I try to enter the application, I am presented with a clock symbol that means “processing” and my phone proceeds to lock up. I will attempt to download the application again and see what happens, but right now I am not impressed.

Obviously there are a few bugs Twitter for Blackberry needs to work out. Once those issues are addressed, I think Twitter for Blackberry could be great. I will even tweet more often as long as I am not rate limited. Facebook lets me post away, so Twitter needs to compete with that.

I have been using Facebook for Blackberry for a few months. The only complaint I have is how long it takes for me to be able to views photos, if at all. Plus the multiple posting of comments is an annoying bug that needs to be erased. Aside from that, I can almost say I love it.

Individual tweets on Twitter about Facebook for Blackberry lean more towards the negative, but I was able to find a couple of positive reactions.

How To: Join The #Cubs Conversation On Twitter

Baseball season is in full swing and Cubs’ fans can follow the action on the radio and television. But fans can also increase their Cubs chatter by joining Twitter.

If you do not have a Twitter account it is easy to sign up at Twitter.com and it may actually be less of hassle then starting an e-mail account. Once you have the Twitter account set up there are many ways you can follow the conversation and action surrounding the Chicago Cubs. It’s fun, easy and great way share and gather information on your favorite team.

1. Do a Twitter search of Cubs with a hash-tag (#) or the pound sign in front of the word “cubs.” So when you enter it in the search application on your Twitter home page it should look like this: #Cubs and the Twitter search icon is on the far right-hand column about half way down the page.

After you hit the search button all the tweets mentioning the #Cubs will be displayed.

2. Join the discussion. Once you search the #Cubs on Twitter you will be able to reply to others’ comments by hitting the “reply” icon located in the right-hand corner of each tweet. By commenting and replying to others you will gain followers faster and be able to engage with other fans on multiple issues and topics all at once.

3. Don’t be afraid to be a follower. Many influential members of the media and Cubs beat reporters often leak information and tweet regularly. Here is a short list of “Cub Tweeters” to get you started on your quest to join the Cubs conversation on Twitter: @CarrieMuskat, @aleagueofherown, @lenandbob, @thekapman, @PWSullivan.

4. Bloggers know best? Once you start searching Twitter for Cubs’ discussions you will run across many people that have their own Cubs’ blogs. Some of these blogs can be quite informative and interesting, however, some of the authors are just hacks spewing dribble. So be selective in what you choose to read and who you choose to follow on Twitter because many bloggers use Twitter as a platform to self-promote their own blogs. There is nothing wrong with this, but some bloggers have less to bring to the table and you want your Cubs’ Twitter stream to be free and clear of nonsense and spam.

M.I.A. tweeted (@_M_I_A_) New York Times Magazine contributor Lynn Hirschberg’s phone number to her thousands of followers Thursday after the journalist published a less-than-flattering feature story about her, according to CNN.

M.I.A.’s tweet read: “917.834.3158 CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill be taking calls all day [expletive].”

About an hour later, M.I.A., a.k.a. Maya, took to Twitter again to vent her lingering frustrations. “NEWS IS AN OPINION! UNEDITED VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW WILL BE ON neetrecordings THIS MEMORIAL WEEKEND,” she wrote.

Hirschberg opened her M.I.A. article by criticizing the recording artist’s 2009 Grammy Awards performance.

She wrote, “Maya, as she is called, was nine months pregnant (to the day), and while she was onstage rapping about ‘some some some I some I murder, some I some I let go’—in a black skintight, body-stocking dress, transparent except for polka-dot patches that strategically covered her belly, breasts and derriere—she began to experience contractions.”

Hirschberg continued, “The baby would just have to wait. The combination of being nearly naked, hugely pregnant, singing incendiary lyrics and having the eyes of the world upon her was too much to resist.”

After criticizing M.I.A.’s birthing routine for having her son, Ikhyd, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles instead of at her home in a pool of water as she “repeatedly announced he would be,” Hirschberg went on to criticize M.I.A. and her fiancé Ben Bronfman’s Los Angeles home.

“Before the Grammys, Maya and Bronfman moved to Los Angeles from New York, buying a house in very white, very wealthy Brentwood, as isolated and bucolic section of the city with minimal history of trauma and violent uprisings.”

M.I.A. is best known for her 2007 hit “Paper Planes,” which, according to Hirschberg’s article, is a rap song that infuses “rebellious, defiant lyrics” about her native Sri Lanka politics. To see for yourself, check out the video below, courtesy of YouTube.

But, according to The New York Observer, Hirschberg said that while it was a “fairly unethical thing to do,” she was not surprised that M.I.A. tweeted her phone number. “She’s a provocateur, and provocateurs want to be provocative,” Hirschberg told the newspaper.

It can be a little overwhelming at first, trying to sort through the many Twitter feeds to find a feed just about green tips. But with a few tricks you can easily find suggestions for greening just about every aspect of your life. The tweets will help you connect with reliable websites and the most popular tips on the web.

The key to finding tips is knowing the right search terms to use. Surprisingly “#greentips” produces only a limited amount of results. “#greentips” might provide a limited amount of leads, but it can provide some interesting ones, such as this one:

So far all the search terms used have provided general search results. This is fine if you are just looking for general ideas that you might not have thought of before, but what if you are looking for something specific? Say you are looking for a better way to clean your home, something without all the toxic chemicals. As with any search you want to make your search as specific as possible. Type in “green cleaning tips” gets you pages of results on general cleaning suggestions while “eco-friendly cleaning tips” provides only two pages worth of very specific results.

While it may be frustrating to search through pages of results on Twitter, often times that is the best way to find new information. Scrolling through the search results you may find information you didn’t even know you were looking for, such as eco-friendly ways to keep mosquitoes away.

Even better is finding a Twitter feed you can follow. You will notice when searching Twitter that the same Twitter handles come up frequently, either their post is being retweeted or they are posting frequently. If you like what they have to say, click through to their profile, read their bio and check out their tweets. Many of the feeds are from websites such as @the_daily_green, which is connected to thedailygreen.com or @ionicgreen, which tweets links to their blog Going Green…for everyday living!

Often times though, the best tweets come from individuals who are not associated with websites, especially if you are looking for overall trends in going green or the environment. One such feed is from Clifton Weatherbee who tweets @green_living_tips.

As with any search engine, the results you find won’t be perfectly tailored to what you are looking for, at least not right away. But spend some time scrolling through the various results and you are sure to find some interesting, helpful facts and useful tips.

Twitter Tips For New Journalists

Before writing for Twitter Journalism, I had a perceived notion that Twitter was just a fad used by self-absorbed social-media addicts interested only in news that affected them personally.

Since I could not grasp why anyone would care what someone ate for lunch that day, I just assumed that the Twitter fad would vanish just as fast as it arrived. Yet, after writing just a few short posts I was able to realize the impact Twitter has had on the journalism community.

Whether it is used to find breaking news, network or self-promote, Twitter is a tool that no journalist can afford to ignore—including myself. So I went on a quest to discover some tips on how the most successful journalists use Twitter on a daily basis, and here are the top three I found:

1. Finding News. Thanks to Mashable.com, I was able to discover Muck Rack, a Website compiled of real-time Twitter activity by credible journalists.

Since Muck Rack, according to Mashable.com, is searchable by news organization, tweets, links, and photos submitted by journalists, it is easy to find breaking news from reliable sources.

By seeking out what journalists are tweeting about today on Muck Rack, you can help predict the news for tomorrow.

2. Networking. Every Monday evening, around 7 to 10 p.m. central time, journalists, bloggers and PR folks from across the nation join together to talk about the media industry via Twitter using the hashtag #journchat.

The #journchat creator and moderator, @PRsarahevans, keeps the discussion going by posting hot topic questions about the industry roughly every 10 minutes. Any discussion participant can ask the questions by sending them directly to @journchat.

Not only can journalists new to Twitter use #journchat to discuss their industry, they can use it to find and gain interesting followers.

For example, just last week alone I was able to find seven media moguls to follow, and five to follow me @RKFiorentino. Just imagine how many followers a journalist could gain by joining the #journchat discussion weekly.

3. Self-Promoting. While some news organizations are developing strict rules and regulations for their reporters to follow while on Twitter, others are using social media personalities to gain readership.

Take the Chicago Tribune’s Twitter personality @ColonelTribune for example. According to Mashable.com, the voice of one of the most respected news organizations in the world is one that just wants to sit down and have a scotch with you.

Instead of just posting article links on their Twitter page, @ColonelTribune adds personality and engages with its audience members, asking and answering questions on a regular basis.

And one way to ensure that you are engaging with your followers after posting article links is to check your @ replies frequently.

If someone made a comment or asked a question regarding your tweet, it is crucial to answer them immediately. As a new journalist to Twitter, not only will replying ensure that the person will read your articles again, it can entice all of their followers to check them out as well.
