Spokentwit, like the name implies, allows Twitter users to speak their tweets. The program opens up Twitter to not only text messages but to voicemail as well. A voice message recorded by a user is given a unique link that is automatically tweeted out by the user. The link leads to a file containing the actual voicemail message.
To get started Twitter users simply need to go to www.spokentwit.com, register their Twitter account and a phone number, email address and create a pin number for security. After that all a Twitter user has to do is all 1-408-317-9313 and an automated service instructs how to leave a spoken tweet.
When I tested it for the first time via this tweet, it took about one minute after my call ended for the tweet to be sent from my account. I found it easy enough to use but it didn’t really let me know what to do when my message was over and then it automatically prompted me to leave another message which resulted in me tweeting a silent recording.
This has the potential to be an invaluable tool for journalists in the field covering events. Short interviews could be conducted on the spot and tweeted out within minutes without the need for processing or transcription. When typing out on a smart phone is too time consuming and inaccurate this allows for rapid transmission of information without the 140 character limit.
According to a response from their feedback submission form, the Spokentwit messages are never deleted. Users may be given the ability to erase messages in the future. The messages are also currently not restricted in length, though down the road a limit of 10 minutes might be implemented to prevent abuse.
