A CNN-commissioned study led by distinguished child psychologist and University of Chicago professor Margaret Beale Spencer that tested 133 children from age groups of 4-to-5 and 9-to-10 revealed surprising results on American children’s racial beliefs.

The new study replicated the 1940s’ milestone Doll Test conducted by psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark that was used to evaluate the impact of segregation on African-American children.
Spencer’s study involved questioning young children, who were asked to point their responses by selecting from a sequence of one to five cartoon pictures varying in skin color from light to dark, according to CNN.
The results revealed a “white bias”, where the white children favored whiteness in the cartoons with positive attributes. Black children shared a similar, yet lesser bias towards whiteness.
