Chicago Blackhawks lose Game 5 to Vancouver Canucks 4-1, after a penalty and injury-filled game. Following much criticism from fans, media, players and the coaching staff, Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo pulls through, making 29 saves, forcing a Game 6 in Vancouver.

According to ESPN, “The biggest difference in [Luongo’s] game was his rebound control. He simply was not spitting the puck out into the scoring areas as he had previously, and though the Hawks shot total of 30 wasn’t bad, their scoring chances were minimal without the many power-play attempts.”

KDSports Roberto Luongo has allowed 16 rebound goals so far this series but tonight is the human vacuum cleaner. #canucks #hawks #nhl

Stats87 @Steinberg960 For me the big difference tonight is Luongo’s rebound control and Nucks D clearing pucks and players better.

The Canucks, on the other hand, had opportunity to score and took advantage of those chances. Canucks Kevin Bieska scored two of his team’s four goals, in addition to Christian Ehrhoff’s goal, just 59 seconds into the game, and Alex Burrows’ empty-netter with 44.6 seconds left in the game.

The Hawks seemed to have taken poor notes on the Canucks’ past three losses, as they repeated many of the Canucks’ mistakes, specifically the steady flow of men they had in the penalty box. While some of the penalties may have been effective, many were simply due to frustration and a few resulted in injuries.

According to CBCSami Salo left the game after taking a shot in the mid-section as Duncan Keith attempted to score a goal. Rolling on the ice in pain, the Canucks athletic therapist tended to Salo, who was later taken to Northwestern Hospital on a stretcher. The Bleacher Report reported that Salo suffered a ruptured testicle.

Within an hour of his injury, fans had already set up a Facebook Page, where visitors can “like” the page, add photos or comments and suggest to friends. The page, titled “Sami Salo’s Ruptured Testicle,” with a Facebook Bio stating, “What if Sami Salo’s testicle didn’t rupture? History will be made,” already has 84 “likes.”

Shane O’Brien left briefly during the second period after being struck in the face by Dustin Byfuglien’s stick, causing the bridge of his nose to gush blood as he made his way back to the bench, but returned later after receiving stitches, according to CBC.

Daniel Sedin also suffered a minor ankle injury following a slash by Dave Bolland, but returned in the third period.

Despite tonight’s loss, Jonathan Toews scored the only goal of the night, adding to his previous point total, making it 19 in 11 playoff games, leading the NHL in playoff points. He also tied a franchise record with five points in a playoff game during Game 4 and became the first Hawks player to score three power-play goals in a single postseason contest, according to ESPN.

Fun Fact: On this date last year, the Hawks were playing Game 5 versus the Canucks in Vancouver. That game, however, had a different outcome, with the Hawks winning to move up 3-2 in the series.

Game 6 will be played at General Motors Place in Vancouver at 8:30PM Tuesday.
