Nigerian Senator Ahmad Sani Yerima, 49, has allegedly married a  13-year-old Egyptian child bride. The Associated Press reports that according to a complaint filed by the Nigerian Human Rights Commission, Yerima paid the Egyptian girl’s family a $100,000 dowry in order to marry her. According to child protection laws enforced in some parts of Nigeria, a woman must be 18 to consent to marriage. People around the world took notice and shared information via Twitter.
