Twitpic by @Mannaz: "Ok this just made me laugh loud over hotel breakfast #pope"

A formal regret was issued to the Vatican by the British ambassador; Francis Campbell when an internal Foreign Office memo filled with appalling suggestions for the Pope to launch his own range of condoms and open an abortion clinic got leaked and printed in the Sunday Telegraph.

The memorandum was drafted by a 23-year-old Oxford graduate, Steven Mulvain who was part of the staff planning events for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the UK. Mulvain is believed to be a junior civil servant and amongst his suggestions to the Pope included, blessing a gay marriage.

Following the leak, Mulvain has been “transferred to other duties”. However, his fan base seems to be growing, a Facebook group has been set up to encourage members to Buy Steven Mulvain a drink or two immediately, with 607 members already.

According to the Guardian, the  following statements were released from the Foreign Office and Cardinal Renato Martino, the former head of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

Foreign Office Statement:

“This is clearly a foolish document that does not in any way reflect UK government or Foreign Office policy or views. Many of the ideas … are clearly ill-judged, naive and disrespectful. The text was not cleared, or shown to ministers or senior officials before circulation. As soon as senior officials became aware of the document it was withdrawn from circulation.”

Cardinal Renato Martino:

“The British government has invited the Pope as its guest and he should be treated with respect…to make a mockery of his beliefs and the beliefs of millions of Catholics not just in Britain but across the world is very offensive indeed.”
